Know your target audience – they’re your top customers.

Knowing your target audience

Dora Aston

Let’s talk about something crucial for your brand’s success – identifying your target audience.

That may seem obvious, but when it comes to branding it’s important that you know who your customers are, because when it comes to marketing, that makes all the difference.

Here’s a quick guide I give to businesses to help them out:

1. Rationalise your product or service.
First things first, what exactly are you offering? Think about what your product or service solves, and its unique benefits. This clarity will help you figure out who needs it the most.

2. Take a look at your current customers.
Who’s already buying from you? Dive into your customer data using tools like Google analytics or social media insights. Look for common traits and behaviours.

3. Carry out some market research.
Check out your industry and your competitors. What trends are emerging? Are there any gaps? Use industry reports and market surveys to gather further insights.

4. Create customer personas.
Imagine your ideal customer. Give them a name, age, job, and hobbies. What challenges do they face? Personas help you understand and connect with your customers better.

5. Segment your audience.
If your target audience is broad, break them down into smaller groups based on demographics, interests, or behaviours. This will help you to tailor your marketing efforts more effectively.

6. Engage on socials.
Join in the conversation on social media. Listen to what your audience is saying and engage with them. Their feedback can be a goldmine of information.

7. Test and adjust.
Try out your marketing strategies and see what works and what doesn’t. Stay flexible and ready to adapt.

8. Wrapping up.
Knowing your target audience is an ongoing journey. Keep identifying them and adjusting as your business grows. The better you know your audience, the more you can serve them.
